The separator is an important part of lead acid battery, its quality directly affects the function and efficacy of lead acid battery, the separator is made of microporous rubber or plastic or glass fiber material, which generally exists in the form of sheet or bag battery, its main role is as below:
1. Prevent the positive and negative plate contact short circuit and ensure the positive and negative plate to achieve the shortest distance.
2. Ensure that the positive and negative ions in the electrolyte pass through and proceed the electrode reaction smoothly.
3. The carrier of the electrolyte.
4. Slow down the fall of lead paste material of positive and negative plate and plate shock damage.
5. Prevent the migration and diffusion of some harmful substances to the electrode through the separator.
Separator for lead-acid batteries shall have the following characteristics:
1. It should have good corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid;
2. It has loose porous structure and can inhale a large amount of electrolyte solution;
3. Good immersion:
4. Meet the mechanical strength and elasticity of use;
5. It has certain pressure resistance;
6. It has a small electrical resistance;
7. In a certain temperature range it has a certain temperature resistance;
8. It has certain aging resistance and oxidation resistance.
There are many types of lead-acid battery separator, and the following types are commonly used at present:
1. Sintered polyvinyl chloride separator (PVC separator)
Sintered polyvinyl chloride separator, also known as PVC separator, is a synthetic resin separator made of microporous polyvinyl chloride by sintering method. This separator has the advantages of good permeability, high mechanical strength, good chemical stability and low resistance. At the same time, its process is simple and its cost is low. The disadvantage is weak corrosion resistance, not suitable for long life battery, this separator is used for starting lead-acid battery.

2. Melt-blown polypropylene separator (PP separator)
Melt-blown polypropylene separator, also known as PP separator, is the use of polypropylene resin with a certain amount of additives, through high pressure melt-blown to microfiber, made into non-woven fabric blank, and then through chemical treatment, according to different specifications required, to be produced into bag type, plate type and groove type, this separator has the advantages of small resistance, high porosity, fast wetting speed and low cost, the disadvantage is that the aperture is large, High temperature lead to be easy to shrink. This kind of separator is mainly used for starting batteries.

3. Microporous polyethylene separator (PE separator)
Microporous polyethylene separator, also known as PE separator, is a sheet separator made of polyethylene powder and related additives, which can be made into bag type. The separator has the advantages of strong oxidation resistance, high porosity, small aperture, low electrical resistance and good toughness. This separator is mainly used for starting batteries.

4. Microfine fiberglass separator (AGM separator)
Microfine glass fiber separator, also known as AGM separator, is a non-compressed glass fiber multilayer felt and sheet structure separator made of ultrafine glass fiber by papermaking method. This separator has the advantages of high acid absorption, fast liquid absorption rate, good hydrophilicity, large surface area, high porosity, small aperture, low electrical resistance, good acid resistance, strong oxidation resistance and so on. This separator is mainly used for lean - liquid VRLA batteries.

5. PE composite separator (PE+GM)
PE composite separator (PE+GM) is made of glass fiber mat and PE separator by composite process. With good mechanical strength and vibration resistance, it can effectively prevent the plate active material falling off and prolong the battery life.
